Mark Lee received his Bachelor of Music in composition from Florida State University, and his Master of Music in composition from Memphis State University.

Post graduate study in composition includes seminars in computer music with Iannis Xenakis; participation for two summers at the Ferienkurse in Darmstadt, Germany, where he studied with Brian Ferneyhough, Michael Finnissy, and attended the concerts and seminars of John Cage during his historic return to Darmstadt; participation for three consecutive summers in the composition and analysis seminars given by Karlheinz Stockhausen in Kürten, Germany.

Lee also holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in German Studies from Vanderbilt University where his research focused primarily upon the corollary between listener cognition in music and reader response theory in reception aesthetics.

Lee is Professor of Music and German at Columbia State College, where he teaches Music Theory, Composition, Form and Analysis, German Literature, and is director of chamber ensembles.
